Motherwell first coined the term the School of New York in a talk in Provincetown, Massachusetts during the summer of 1949. He revisited the theme in a longer lecture on The New York School that he delivered at the Mid-Western Art Association Conference, in Louisville, Kentucky, in October 1950.
