Budd Hopkins, a painter and member of the Long Point Gallery, wrote this poem on the day of Motherwell's death. Hopkins was inspired to become an artist after attending a weeklong seminar Motherwell gave at Oberlin College in 1952. (Motherwell's outline for this seminar and the students's responses to it are preserved in the William C. Seitz Papers in the Archives of American Art.)
