William Healey Dall - Field Notes, Florida, 1887

About the Project

Did you know that in the past 35 million years, over 1,000 different vertebrate species have lived in Florida? As such, Florida is one of the most plentiful fossil regions in the country, with specimens being found near shorelines, in caves and fields, and along rivers throughout the state. It is a popular destination for amateur fossil hunters and scientists alike--including naturalist and US National Museum curator William Healey Dall. Dall traveled to Florida in 1887 as part of his work for the United States Coastal Survey. His field notes from the trip detail the month he spent exploring Florida--purchasing and collecting fossils along the way. Go fossil finding in Florida with Dall and join other volunteers in transcribing his notes!
