Journal of the Tomas Barrera, May 1-6, 1914

About the Project

In August 1915, the deadly Galveston Hurricane ravaged the shorelines of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and the United States. Among the $71 billion in damages was the Tomas Barrera research vessel. A year before the ship was wrecked in the massive hurricane, the Tomas Barrera had set sail for Cuba, with researchers from the US National Museum (now the National Museum for Natural History) on board. Find out what the scientific crew observed and collected on one of the Tomas Barrera's last missions in this ship journal from May 1914. Join other digital volunteers in transcribing the fascinating notes from one of this research vessel's last journeys!
