Proceedings of the Board of Regents Meeting - May 13, 1964

About the Project

Started with the bequest of one James Smithson over 170 years ago, the Smithsonian has received other bequests over the years. In May 1964, the Board of Regents took up the issue of what to do with Java Farm, a defunct dairy farm willed to the Smithsonian by Robert Lee Forrest. Located on the Rhode River by the Chesapeake Bay, its potential uses were unclear. Please join us to transcribe these minutes and learn more about the options that were considered and how the land is used today.
