William Henry Holmes – Monte Alban (Oaxaca), Mexico, 1895
About the Project
Did you know that the extensive ruins of Monte Alban can be seen from anywhere in the central Oaxaca Valley? The ruins, which reach over a thousand feet high, were part of one of the earliest Mesopotamian cities.
Get a view for yourself with the incredible sketches completed by artist, anthropologist, and archaeologist William Henry Holmes. Holmes—who spent decades working for various branches of the Smithsonian--sketched these ruins in his 1895 field notes, while he was a curator at the Field Museum in Chicago.
