8322/1 [[circular stamp]] SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION AUG 1 1866 [[/circular stamp]] San Francisco, July 6th 66 Dear Prof, I enclose copies of a late letter from Elliott, and a sketch of the Sci. work which I have laid before Mr. Mumford in anticipation of future inquiries and changes in the mode of operation of the Company. We have orders to report on board the ship Nightingale Saturday (7th) night in readiness for sea. God grant it may not be another false alarm. I have sent you two telegrams for particulars of fire but as yet rec'd no answer; as the line has been much interrupted by Indians &c I have nothing new to tell you my only wish and anxiety now is to get off and to work! I cannot express my eagerness and anxiety [[end page]]
