to get away. If I have my health and nothing disastrous happens I shall work like a horse for the cause for two years. If I should never return give me credit for an earnest desire [[underlined]] to work for the works sake [[/underlined]]. I may lack the ability to do as much as many others but what ability I have I shall not grudge to use to the greatest extent. A skull has been found in the surf auriferous gravel deposits [[superscript]] Calaveras (?) [[/superscript]], 137 feet below the surface, with gravel and unbroken crusts of lava above it, and several hundred feet from the outcrop of the tunnel of the mine. It resembles the [[underlined]] Enghis [[/underlined]] skull more than any I know of and is associated with the bones of the mammoth, rhinoceros and extinct camel; some bones of which Dr Leidy has in hand. This is [[underlined]] sub rosa [[/underlined]] at present. It is very perfect for so old a skull and with a very large facial angle. It is however very thick. It was found by a Dr W^m Jones and is in the hands of Gabb, who will do nothing with it till Whitney [[end page]]
