In content of saline constituents and of extracted matter [[underlined]] soluble in alcohol [[/underlined]] they differ not much. To what extent any difference may render the new extract more or less valuable or acceptable cannot be determined before introduction to more extensive use. A few facts may assist in judging of the extent of this resource for food material. In Northern Maine and Canada large quantities of herring are taken and treated as above described: the amount I have no means of learning. The supply of menhaden is almost without limit all along the coast, and as few are here taken with spawn in them (not one in a million in Maine) their numbers may not be perceptibly lessoned by reason of what are taken. The quantity treated for oil and scrap alone as appears by the reported statistics of the U.S. Menhaden Association (which embrace the larger number of those engaged in the business) was In 1873., 1.191.100 Barrels "[[ditto for In]] 1874., 1.642.927 "[[ditto for Barrels]]
