War Department, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands. Washington, Oct 28th 1865. Col Whittlesey Asst. Comr &c. Col., I am directed by Maj. Genl O. O. Howard to ask information respecting the estate of John C. Washington, near Kinston N. C. The property of John A. Washington was by your endorsement of Aug. 21st 1865 upon a letter of Lt. Frank Barrows Asst. Supt. &c, recommended to be set apart for the use of Freedmen. This endorsement was approved here, and notification to that effect sent to you Aug. 26th. In letter of Oct. 6th you requested to know whether the wording of the note of Aug 26th respecting property of John C. Washington
