[W227 ENCL] Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Headquarters, Eastern District of North Carolina, Newbern, N. C., July 2nd, 1866. Major Genl D. E. Sickles Commanding Dep't. of the Carolinas. General. I have the honor request an Informal leave of absence for 6 days for the purpose of leaving the Dept, and visiting Baltimore Md- on account of the Sickness of my wife, who is utterly dependent on me, having no male relative there except Rebels, who would not do anything to aid her, in my absence- and who is compelled this week, to remove from her present residence, the Year having expired - and the Landlord - a "Rebel Sympathizer," refusing to permit me to retain it longer. My reasons for making this application, in an informal manner, are these, that If made through intermediate commanders, it would take so long, that I could not reach
