New York, N.Y. 10022 Le 15 Avril 1972 Cher Monsieur Sandoz; Le hasard de recherches m'a remis en main certaines notes que j'ai sur CHASSERIAU, et je me permete de vous demander si vous êtes en rapport avec Monsieur Varin, qui était Conseiller Culturel à l'Ambassade de France à Londres, il y a une dixaine d'années. Je crois qu'il habite maintenant la France. Or, je m'étais noté qu'il possedait un dessin en pied de Lamartine, par CHASSERIAU. Je n'ai plus souvenance de l'exposition où il avait figuré, mais toujours est-il que je lui avait demandé s'il se deferait de cette oeuvre, qui m'avait beaucoup plu. Il me répondit par la negative. D'où ma question - seriez-vous à même de l'approcher à nouveau sur ce sujet. Je pense que ce dessin est très proche de celui du Louvre, mais les dates ne diffèrent-t-elles pas? Mais de plus je m'étais noté que Monsieur Varin possedait également une grande tête au crayon de Lamartine, la tête seule, destinée à un portrait à l'huile par CHASSERIAU. Je n'ai pas souvenance, par contre, d'avoir jamais vu cette grande tête au crayon - en auriez-vous une reproduction? Et quel intérêt présente-t-elle au point de vue esthetique? J'espère ne pas vous importuner en vous posant ces questions, mais je compte sur tout l'amour que vous avez pour ce bel artiste, pour m'en excuser si necessaire.
