Brev Major Genl Nelson A Miles. Assistant Comm. for North Carolina. The undersigned citizens of Murfreesboro North Carolina have heard with regret that Lt George S. Hawley who has been for more than a year stationed in this place as our Officer of the Freedmen's Bureau has been ordered to another post of duty. Lt Hawley since his residence here, has been diligent, faithful and impartial in the discharge of his duties and at the same time has demeaned himself in such a becoming manner as to win the respect and confidence of the entire community. We sincerely believe that the public interest will be promoted by retaining him here and we therefore earnestly but respectfully ask that it may be done. Column 1|Column 2 -------|------| David A.
