and the decision of the Commissioner would be obtained. Believing during the recent war I committed no act in aid of the rebellion, I have the honor therefore to request that I may be reappointed The oath on file in your office was only modified so far as to add that I had been a Justice of the Peace before and during the war. I beg leave to say that my Commission as Justice of the Peace was received from the Governor of the State in 1852, and was never revoked. During the war the only papers signed by me in my official capacity were two State warrants for the Arrest of men in the rebel military service who were committing depredations. The fact of having held an old Commission as Justice of the Peace and that I acted under its authority in some instances, may I trust be overlooked when it is remembered that such authority was never used by me in aid of any pretended Government in hostility to the U.S. but solely to do what I could in preserving Order and administering Justice between man and man. My hostility to the so called Confederate Government was open and avowed before and through the whole war I voted
