E. 13. B. R. F. and A. L. Vol. 2' 1867 B R F & A L Off Asst Supt Sub Dist of Granville Oxford N. C. Mar 28" 1867 Jones W. W. Capt. V. R. C. & Asst. Supt. States that at the solicitation of the Sheriff & Chairman of County Court & many of the respectible citizens of his County, he requests that an Officer & squad of 25" men be sent to Oxford on April 4" 1867 for a guard to protect the Sheriff in the execution of Henderson Cooper (Fd) who is sentenced to be hung on Friday April 5" 1867. That the above mentioned Gentlemen apprehend an attempt to rescue said Cooper. Also States that the presence of U. S. Troops will have a wholesome effect on the Freedmen & others, showing that the U. S. Authorities (over) will sustain the civil Authorities to suppress & punish crime, That the most practicable route from Raleigh is via R & G R Rd to Henderson, That three days rations will be required.
