Bureau. R. F. & A L. Office Asst Supt Sub-District of Granville Oxford, N. C., Mar 28" 1867. Colonel At the earnest solicitation of the Sheriff, the Chairman of the County Court and many of the most respectable citizens of this County, I have the honor to request that an Officer and a squad of about twenty-five US infantry be sent to this town on Thursday the 4" day of April 1867 to form a guard to protect the Sheriff in the execution of Henderson Cooper (Fd) who is sentenced to be hanged on Friday, April 5" 1867. The above mentioned Gentlemen, apprehend an attempt to rescue said Henderson Cooper (Fd). Even if there is no such attempt, they claim that the presence of U. S. Troops will have a wholesome effect on the Freedmen, and others, showing that the U.S. Authority will sustain all efforts of the Civil Authorities to suppress and punish crime. (over)
