4 he had seen. There are some drawbacks though. The population is made up of small Farmers, Mechanics and Merchants, traders, swindlers and loafers that every country is cursed with more or less; that is too lazy to work. (I speak of the [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] three latter classes); but are moths to Society, and blots to a Nation. The farmers that are worth from $5 [[strikethrough]] 000 [[/strikethrough]] to 20,000 dollars generally controll the labor of the Country; and the price of produce is controlled to some extent by the Merchants. In the present condition of the country, the day laborer has no voice in priceing his wages or the bacon and corn that he recieves for his work; and it will never be otherwise until by public improvements, and Manufacturing labor is in greater demand. While the supply is greater than the demand the labor will be controlled in this way. Appeals to the hart of this people to be just, and liberal are vain. I hope it will not be offensive to you, but in your leisure hours you can glean out the facts for the benefit of others, who may enquire. I assure you that it is not overestimated, or rated [[?]], and persons from the Northern States that desire to settle in this State would do well to visit this part of the State of North Carolina Yours respectfully John M.
