Raleigh Oct. 18/67 Major Genl Miles Dear Sir I have known the bearer, Solomon, personally from his boyhood. He was a faithful slave and has behaved himself well since his emancipation. His old master was named Jno. Moss. He married a slave belonging to Priscilla [[Foss? Free?]]. After Solomon & his wife had a number of children, Mrs [[Foss? Free?]], in order to emancipate her negroes, removed to Indiana, carrying with her Solomon's wife & children. Solomon remained here a slave, with emancipation as a result of the late war. Two of his sons, as I am informed, were soldiers in the Federal army and one of them who was unmarried, died or was killed in the service, his mother having died some years before.
