JACQUES SELIGMANN & CO., Inc., 5 East 57th Street, New York, New York. April 28th., 1943. Dear Boris: I have been delaying writing as I was hoping to convey some pleasant tidings to you as a result of your two sculptures "God Unknown" and "Ariadne" having been proposed to the Metropolitan Museum. Unfortunately this has not materialized. However, from a conversation I have just had with Mr. Hobart Nichols, he has asked me to leave for a while longer "Ariadne" and to call in the meantime for "God Unknown". On your behalf I have accepted this, as Mr. Nichols feels that there might still be a chance of taking up "Ariadne" a t a later date. No price about either sculpture was mentioned by me and I am wondering whether you have had direct communications with the Metropolitan, and if so, do post me about the figures you mentioned. Should you not have done so, please post me about what I am to say. In your last letter received on the 17th., you mention $5,000., for "Ariadne", and you add "or if the offer is reasonable even less." Now I doubt that, should they reconsider "Ariadne" as I am hoping, that they will make me an offer. This is just my surmise - and it might be better to quote them the very lowest figure you would accept. About "God Unknown" - I am sorry to harp back to this topic - you don't make it clear whether you allow me to mention $7,000., instead of $8,000. Please do answer me. Though I received a very charming little note from James J. Hill, saying that he would be in New York about Easter time and would come in, I haven't seen him yet. I am going to write to Mr. Holmes within the next few days and of course will post you about his answer. I am sorry to hear how disappointed you seem to be about your trip around the camps in connection with the MacArthur bust. Did you think of proposing it to West Point? With kind regards, Sincerely, (Germain Séligmann) Boris Lovet-Lorski, Esq., 1655 Gilcrest Drive, Beverly Hills, California.
