[[underlined]] COPY [[/underlined]] June 23rd, 1942 Dear David: I received in yesterday's mail your nice invitation to the opening of an exhibition of Portrait Busts of the Presidents of the South American Republics, this coming Saturday. Unfortunately, in my present state of health I trust you can understand that I have to forego all traveling for the time being. It is particularly hard as I would like so much to see you and talk to you about a few things. With the opportunity of these lines I am enclosing two photographs of a bronze statue which I think has great beauty and which I saw while in Los Angeles at the studio of my friend Boris Lovet-Lorski. The statue representing the American Venus is seven feet high. The first cast of it is in the Petit Palais in Paris, the second in the collection of Mr. William Randolph Hearst, and the figure represented in the photograph is the third cast. Would such a statue perhaps interest your institution in one of the gardens? I think it could be had at a very reasonable price. In the meanwhile, I hope I shall have the pleasure of seeing you here in New York soon, and trusting these lines find you well, I remain with kind personal regards, Always sincerely, (R. H. Waegen) Enc. 2 David E. Finley, Esq. National Gallery of Art Smithsonian Institution Washington, D. C.
