86 THE CONVENTION TEACHER QUESTIONS ON THE LESSON 1. Why a divine message for those in Exile? 2. How did god exhibit his love and care for Israel? ] Lights on the Lesson By REV. BERNARD O. BYRD, D. D. LIGHT NO. 1--The Israelites when in bondage were faced with a mental problem; that is, that their sons and daughters would be forced to suffer much because of the sins of the parents. They thought specially about the youth growing up in bondage and suffering at the hands of their captors. The message of god brought a ray of hope in the explanation that each person should suffer for his own sins and for no other than his own. LIGHT NO. 2--In the midst of Israel's bondage they longed for a re-establishment of their kingdom and a return to the former glory it had once boasted. In the message, God informs them that there would be a re-gathering of Israel in the Holy Land. This prophecy is yet to be fulfilled. (The writer's opinion is that the present feud between the Arabs and the Jews, is but the beginning of the labor-pains leading to the birth of this fulfillment.) LIGHT NO. 3--In the prophecy, light is given to indicate that since through the fall of righteousness, Israel was scattered, through its restoration, they shall return. LIGHT NO. 4--The STRONG, here referred to as being the object of destruction, is to be looked upon as the oppressors of the righteous and righteousness. Editorial Reflections By REV. S. A. PELASANTS, D. D. We are taught here that all souls are god's; the fathers, the sons, the daughters, the saints and the sinners. He is creator of all, and he is owner of all. He tells us plainly that he does not punish the son for the father's sins, nor the daughter for the mother's sins, nor the parents for the children's sins, nor the children for the parent's sins. God is just in all he does. He knows all, and he does according to his own character. Not one iota of any thing right or wrong does he give or charge to another. Every one is justly treated. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. These words are not only spoken by him, but he sees to it, that they are done with each one as spoken. No soul can sin and escape the punishment for it. The soul that sinneth is the soul that dies. The soul that does not sin is the soul that lives. NO soul can sin and not die, any more than a soul can believe in god and not live. Both are impossible. All souls in sin are dead in sin. All souls in christ live eternally. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. These god's sheep shall not cause the faithful ones to be destroyed. They may be scattered, but not destroyed. The lord says here, behold, I myself, even I will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. AS is stated here about the Israelites, so is it about the Gentiles. It is a fact that unfaithful pastors over the church of god may cause the people of god to be scattered by their failure to attend god's church as he has commanded them; but in time god will bring others into his church, that he through them can gather together all that were scattered under the unfaithful shepherd; as is stated here. god must and does condemn every unfaithful pastor of our day, just as he did those set up over the Israelites. god has some pastors that will feed and attend the people in his church just as he commands them. Such are the faithful ones through who god gathers the sheep of his fold, his church, the body of christ, and attend them. Jesus here says he will be the shepherd of his sheep. When christ is the shepherd the sheep will not need any thing. They may go in and out in him and find pasture. He is to all as is expressed in the twenty-third Psalms. Under his leadership the little ones become big; the weak ones become strong; the strong ones become stronger; the sick ones become well, and all become one happy family. And as he said to Israel here, he also says to his church today. He makes his church clean and keeps it clean, bringing it more and more into perfection, filling it with the holy spirit and power of the most high god. April 18, 1948 THE RETURN FROM EXILE SENIOR TOPIC: FULFILLING GOD'S PURPOSE Ezra 1:1-4; 4:24; Hagal 1:3-8, 13 14 [[line]] AUTHORIZED VERSION 1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the lord stirred up the sprit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, 2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The lord god of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is Judah. 3 Who is there among you of all his people? his god be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is Judah, and build the house of the lord god of Israel, (he is the god,) which is [[/italics]] in Jerusalem. 4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, besides the freewill offering for the house of god that is in Jerusalem. 24 Then ceased the work of the house of god which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia. 3 Then came the word of the lord by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house] lie waste? 5 Now therefore thus saith the lord of hosts; Consider your ways. 6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. 7 Thus saith the lord of hosts; Consider your ways. 8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the lord. 13 Then spake Haggai the lord's messenger in the lord's message unto the people, saying I am with you, saith the Lord. 14 And the lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; they came and did work in the house of the lord of hosts, their god.
