132 THE CONVENTION TEACHER Lesson XII. June 20, 1948 THE HOPE FOR THE MESSIAH SENIOR TOPIC: JEWISH HOPES FOR THE MESSIAH Ezekiel 34:23-28, Daniel 7:13, 14, Zachariah 9:9, 10. 12:10; 13:1. [[line]] AUTHORIZED VERSION 23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 24 And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it. 25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. 26 And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing. 27 And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I am the Lord, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them. 28 And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid. 13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. 10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea, even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. 10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. [[line]] REVISED VERSION 23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 24 And I, Jehovah, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them; I, Jehovah, have spoken it. 25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land; and they shall dwell securely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. 26 And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in its season; there shall be showers of blessing. 27 And the tree of the field shall yield its fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase, and they shall be secure in their land; and they shall know that I am Jehovah, when I have broken the bars of their yoke, and have delivered them out of the hand of those that made bondmen of them. 28 And they shall no more be a prey to the nations, neither shall the beasts of the earth devour them; but they shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid. 13 I saw in the night – visions, and, behold, there came with the clouds of heaven one like unto a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion, is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass. 10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off; and he shall speak peace unto the nations: and his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born. 1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. INTRODUCTION In this period of the life of Israel their shepherds who were covetous fed themselves and not their flocks. These shepherds represent the priests and Levites who in Ezekiel's time were very corrupt and added much to Israel's apostacy and ruin. In this gloomy period a ray of light is seen in the blessedness of the true Israel of God under the reign of David, the great shepherd of the sheep. Our Lord Jesus Christ was named after this prince by a figure exceedingly frequent in the sacred order. In this dark day the prophet sees one like the Son of Man, the Messiah, who destroyed the dominion of the evil of these kingdoms with conquests of neighboring nations and the changing of their religion. EXPOSITION I. THE GOOD SHEPHERD'S WORK. (VV. 23-28) (23) And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; He shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. About four hundred years David, king of Israel, had been dead and from that time until now there never was a ruler of any kind either in the Jewish church or state that bore the name of David. This great shepherd referred to must be Jesus Christ. Jehovah will place Him, the one true Shepherd, over the people and He shall feed them, even the descendants of David. (24) And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it. This verse tells us that God and Christ are all in all in His church, Jesus is still prince among them; the Lord will be the God of the people in all their relationships. To Him the call and qualifications of all true pastors belong, and from Him they must come. "And he has blotted out what is called uninterrupted succession, that every Christian minister may seek and receive credentials from Himself." Here is the grand reason why the uninterrupted succession cannot be, and here is the proof also that the church that practices it, and builds upon it, must be a false church. (25) And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. The original is emphatic: "And I will cut with them the peace covenant;" that is, a covenant sacrifice, procuring and establishing peace between God and man, and man and his fellowmen. This "cutting" refers to the ancient method of making covenants; the blood was poured out; the animal was divided from head to tail exactly in two; the divisions placed opposite to each other; the contracting parties entered into the space, going in at each end and met in the middle and there took their covenant oath. And I will cause the evil bests to cease. These false and ravenous pastors, Jesus Christ purges them out of His church and destroys that power by which they lauded over God's heritage. They shall dwell unharmed in the wilderness and stay in safety in the woods. Christ our good Shepherd has caused the evil beasts to come out of the land, having vanquished all our spiritual enemies, broken their power and triumphed over them; no raving beasts shall devour them for all evil shall be conquered. (26) And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessings. Jehovah acts Himself to make the nation and all the places about the hill a blessing to themselves and to His hill, and surrounding people. In the proper season, the shower will come to water the earth and the crops shall be made ready for the gathering, and because of this fine people blessed by Je-
