[[preprinted]] Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Head-Quarters, Asst. Commissioner, State of North Carolina, Raleigh, N.C. ^[[July 10"]] 1865. [[/preprinted]] Lt F H Beecher A A A Genl Sir, I have the honor to lay before you for action the following complaint of Mary Edwards (colored) On Friday and Saturday of last week she states (and bears on her body marks to prove her truth) that she was severely beaten by Asa Rigsby, Vernon Rigsby, John [[Parsenton?]] & David [[Norman?]] citizens of Chatham County. These parties as she says are not owners of the place where she lives and beat her because by order of her former master she forbade them taking the peaches and plundering the place generally. On Saturday her employer & former master Mr Edwards was present & remonstrated against their abuse of her but they paid no heed to him.
