6 There were a great many people at the meet considering how far it was, and what an unsettled day; and as the master and his followers jumpted the first fence and ran after the hounds across the field, the carriages and less daring horsemen followed the road to meet the hunters farther down. It had begun to rain even before the hounds were let loose, but people did not seem to mind it, and I for one did not care two [[end page]] [[start page]] 7 straws. But every minute after we were started it rained harder until it was as though you had poured a pail of water over my head, in other words it rained "pitchforks". My riding habit became so wet that it all stuck to me, and the water from the brim of my hat ran down my face, and almost prevented my seeing. Best still it was amusing and Alfred and I rode on as though it had been a fine sunshiny afternoon
