[[newspaper clipping]] AVIATOR IS PRAISED FOR DIFFICULT FEAT ^[[Apr 15]] ^[[13]] Lieut. Milling Is Highly Commended for 224 Miles flight Under Unfavorable Conditions. Second Lieut. Thomas De Witt Milling, U.S.A., has been designated by Maj. Gen. Carter, commanding the division mobilized at Galveston, Tex., as "one of the foremost aviators of the world." This high praise from Gen. Carter followed a flight from Texas City to San Antonio, a distance of 224 miles, and return, in which Lieut. Milling guided the areoplane, and Second Lieut. W.C. Sherman was passenger and observer. The flight each way was continuous. The weather conditions were such that Gen. Carter states in his report to the War Department that he "would not have ordered the trip." There was a wind of more than 25 miles an hour on the first flight and of twenty miles an hour on the day the return flight was made. Lieut. Sherman made a rough map of all the country passed over on the return trip. This map has been received by the War Department, and has been pronounced as a positive demonstration of the possibilities of aeroplanes for scouting purposes in time of war in an unfamiliar territory.
