[[underlined]] ACTING AS AGENTS FOR THE CLARENCE H. MACKAY ESTATE [[/underlined]] September 18th, 1941 Dear Baron Cassel: Thank you for your letter of the 17th and for your offer of $3,000. for the two pair of sconces which we are forwarding to the Executors of the Mackay Estate and which I hope they will accept. Your offer was transmitted only after I had looked at the four sconces very carefully. They are all by the same hand, very typical works of Niccolo Roccatagliata. As I stated before, they are all of an identical model, the only difference being in their patine. However, I want to point out to you that while looking them over, I saw that some of the wings had been broken and soldered at their insertion on the back of the puttis. It is naturally invisible from the front as the solder is hidden by the puttis body. All four sconces are described in the catalogue of the Mackay Collection compiled by Dr. Valentiner as "Two Pairs of Candle Sconces".They come from the collection of Earl Brownlow, Ashridge Park, Berkhamstead, England. I shall let you know as soon as we have an answer from the Executors, and in the meantime with best regards, Yours very sincerely, (Georges E. Seligmann) Baron Cassel van Doorn Oxford House 115 South Oxford Avenue Ventnore, New Jersey ^[[GS]]
