10 -----------------|------- Name and rank of writer | Purport of Letter ------|---------- | to the hands of the Wardens. owing to the suspension of the Collector of Taxes in the County by Maj. Van Horn. the Post Commander. The Court not anticipating that the support of the entire Poor of the County would be so soon and so suddenly thrown upon it did not. impose a sufficient Tax. to support all. and that which had been in will not be placed in the hands of the Wardens under existing Laws. till Feb Term 1868. and the Consequence will be that without some assistance from the Government there will necessarily be it is feared some suffering among the destitutes this year. I am also instructed to call your attention to the large number of paupers who came to this from other Counties who came. to this from other Counties during the war having acquired a domicile and legal settlement here it is beyond the power of the Civil Authorities to send them to their Original homes and I would respectfully suggest that it would afford this County great relief if the Military Authorities would send to the Counties from which they came. all such refugees white and black as are likely to become a County Charge. it is understood that the Action of Genl Schofield in Virginia is a precedent for this course. -------------|--------- Moore Stephen Lt Col VRC S A Commr | No 23 Bureau of R.F. and A L Office Sub Asst Commr New Bern N.C Sept 25th 1867 Bvt Maj R Dillon Asst Sub Asst Commr Beaufort N.C Sir I have this day sent you by Express the following Stationery Viz, 5 quires letter paper, 3 quires Foolscap paper, 10 sheets envelope paper, 6 pieces Office tape, 2 sheets blotting paper, 300 Envelopes 40 steel pens, 1 bottle black into Arnolds and bottle seal ink. in full of your requisition as allowed Viz 40 steel pens instead of One Hundred --------------|-------------- ----------------|---------- Name and rank of writer | Purport of Letter ----------|----------- Coats A. 1st Lt VRC in Charge of Claim Div New Bern N.C.
