[[preprinted]] 25 [[/preprinted]] so they radioed it down again to take its elevator back. Our helo came in at that time & Ed Z. talked his way onto a helo headed for McMurdo. Then I mentioned Bill's radio -- an item Ed forgot to put in Herc. However I rode to McM carrying the radio but not Bill's booze or other stuff. Evening - movie Baa Baa Black Sheep- I started day w mukluks on - Dean talked me into changing to my Makalus - Ed Z said [[underlined]] never [[/underlined]] use Makalus - I decided to try : w 3 pr. socks they were OK. & I had to have [[crawfares?]] in field - But I felt like an astronaut or a clown: Parka too big - wind pants too big - Boots too big, glasses too dark; mittens way too big. Dec. 23 An unintended, unexpected day off. One helicopter is in McMurdo-- the one Ed flew in on. Three must be in camp at all times before any may fly passengers. One always on ground for search & rescue (Navy rules). So we awaited its return-- unscheduled. At breakfast the estimate was 11 AM -- all through the day the estimate grew later. We numbered & wrapped my "dolomitic" meteorite. I repacked my gear - After lunch Dean and I moved to new cots. I claimed Ed Zeller's next to the door & window. It will be a hastle with people coming & going; yet it is cooler & somehow more private Easier to get out & in a far corner. In the middle of the hut, where we were, some people bullshot by night and slept by day. It was hot, cramped & public. Also Zeller's sleeping bag remained behind & I put mine on top of it and of an ensolite pad he had. Helic. finally arr. about 6:PM. we passed. 0°C at 7:15 PM A mild, clear day -- too bad we cant loaf outside. Didn't hike -- nested.
