Feb. 23 Wed. 306 Pagan [[strikethrough]] November 1 [[/strikethrough]] Ananda Pagoda - 12th century. White washed walls - warm grey stone floors - pale Indian red, gilded ceilings - Excellent, delightful sculptures in the niches - Life’s burden - gilded figures against pale venetian Red - niches inside paneled greyed cobalt & ultramarine Blue - Tremendous, standing Buddhas - gilded, one against blue glass mosaic 27 feet in height. Thatbyinnyu Temple 1144 AD. Empty, spacious & lofty corridors - no decorations whatever - on all the levels - whitewashed walls - no image of the Buddha - but for two guardian angels guarding the door to the steps leading to the top. On one of the highest levels, overlooking the valley, a seated Guilded Buddha - from this level - another 108 stone steps to the uppermost height. Pagan 307 Feb. 23 [[strikethrough]] November 2 [[/strikethrough]] I write my name & Razels on the walls with the date. Ananda Monastery - also 12 Century Beautiful murals - Chinese Influence because of Chinese Aggression at that period- Well preserved. ochre - vermilion - alizarine - dark alizarine drawing - with paler greenish blue, skin tones - beige pinks well greyed. As for the city, again, it is people by the monasteries & rest houses for the monks - The only sounds one hears, are the birds, the occasional bell - the barking of a dog. The quietude & peace as one contemplates this classic, sacred city. The dust brown earth, hear [[here]] & there a cart drawn by oxen - the low gentle brown mountains, the warm red brown brick of most of the pagodas - heightened by the solitary whites & their golden spires - the peaceful - cloudless, dust ridden blue sky - & the tiny swallows circling the endless spires.
