Charlotte N.C. August 1st 1867 Sir A am just in receipt of your note of inquiry in regard as to whether I can conscienciously take the "Iron Clad" Oath and whether I have been in the Confederate Service, in what capacity &c. I took the Iron Clad Oath when I entered upon the duties of Revenue Assessor in 1865, and was then asked the same questions. I think if there [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] are men in this country that can take it, I can, for, if I have ever wished the Confederacy any Success, I am not aware of it. I was forced into the Confederate service as conscript, and being found unfit for field service was detailed for light duty as clerk in the Q.M. Dept where I remained until the close of the war I would like to find a man that ever heard me speak (except under peculiar circumstances) in favor of the Confederacy, the general impression may have been that I was in favor,
