National Museum, Wash. D.C. 20 Feb. 1947. Dear Doris: I should be rather careful about giving Grandma too much candy after her birthday celebration. She has probably had a lot of sweets, and at her age she hasn't too much resistance and will probably make herself sick. Don't give her any chocolate anyhow. She appreciates gum. Dolores called me up again the other night to talk. She is quite excited over your new escort and longed to get a letter from you telling her all about him. She wishes she had someone to take her around. Her schoolwork is going along pretty well, and she is quite qctive [[active]] in her church affairs around home. She told of attending one party the night before over at Del Ray and coming home with the minister's family. She seems to be pretty much on the go. It is a snowy day here. So chilly yesterday that I couldn't keep warm. To-day I woke before five shivering and went down stairs to finish the night on the couch, and by light it had begun to snow. We have company coming for supper, Dad expects to bring them home in his car. I have everything all ready but the cooking, but I wondering now if this keeps up if they will come. I don't want to put them up for the night. It is slippery already. Coming over Memorial Bridge Dad kept slurring and swerving and was as nervous as a witch for fear he would crash into a car on either side of him in the morning rush. I don't know how it will be later on. Miss Colcord called me up about a week ago to ask about Elizabeth Bryant there at the M.C.Z. She was about her vintage, but she had never known her and she asked me so many curious questions about her. Yesterday I received a note from Miss Colcord saying that I might get a letter from a Radcliffe graduate concerning Miss Bryant as to her cultural and scientific prowess. So I judge that she is under consideration as a Phi Beta Kappa honorary member. I hope she gets it. Miss Colcord said that they had already asked Mr. Banks about her. I know he would give her a good send-off, and I am prepared to, too. I think a lot of Miss Bryant. I had lunch with Helen yesterday. She had a letter from her mother that she had brought for me to read. Her mother told how "Doris Holmes Blake" had called for a little there and had played with the baby. They all get you down as Doris Holmes, funny, isn't it? I hope you got the check all right. You must keep track of how soon you are going to run short. We can't always foresee it at this end. I hope your debtors have paid up. Don't let too much get out. You can easily wash up the lower part of your white ball dress, that netting washes and irons easily, I am sure, only don't let it get pulled out of line in ironing. Were you chilly? Did the otherss have as light a dress? I see in the store windows just as light dresses for winter wear as that. How do they dress there? I hope you don't have to dance wholly all the evening with one man? Do you? It is more fun and gets you acquainted to change about a bit. Is he a good dancer? My paper is at an end. Am looking for a letter to-day. Love, Mother.
