ATCM 51-38 1 September 1977 15 this point, decrease bank angle to complete the maneuver with wings level at approximately 200 KIAS as you complete the 180º turn. Lazy 8 Practice lazy 8s through a wide range of airspeeds and power settings. For training purposes, first demonstrate proficiency as follows: Attain 350 KIAS and set power at 95 percent. From straight-and-level flight, start a smooth climbing turn in either direction so that the nose describes an arc above the horizon, reaching the maximum pitch attitude at approximately 45º of turn. At this point the nose should start back down to the horizon, passing through the horizon at 90º of turn with approximately 90º of bank at approximately 200 KIAS. As the nose passes through the horizon, gently begin a smooth, gradual rollout and pullup, planning to reach 350 KIAS after 180º of turn in a level flight attitude. Enter the second half of the maneuver by turning in the opposite direction.
