- 3 - where the "élèves les plus fortés do their salon pictures. We went to all of them, and although the work was good, I thought it was very cold, and all the same. Almost all charcoal, done percicely [[precisely]] the same way. It did not seem so dreadfully crowded in any of the places. The best workers have left the atelier, and are doing their salon pictures so the work in the new Julian's is as good as the old. The room where these ladies were was a longish attic up a lot of stairs and a charming young French girl who was doing a full length picture of girl singing. Very good -[[showed us ?]] She seemed to have more soul than the others, as far as I could tell. One had an old woman posing, and hers seemed to be going to have a good deal of feeling - The models were in a row against the wall in various out-door and in door costumes and more or less affected poses. The common looking French girl was doing a big pastel of a girl in a scarlet dress and curl down the middle
