THURGOOD MARSHALL ACADEMIC HIGH SCHOOL 45 Conkling St San Francisco, CA, 9412[[?]] (415) 695-5612, FAX 285-528[[?]] November 13, 1996 Dr. Sally Ride University of California, San Diego 9500 Gillman Dr. La Jolla, Ca. 92093 Dear Dr. Ride, Several weeks ago I attended your presentation during Parent's Day at UCSD as I have a son matriculating at Revelle College and a son at Eleanor Roosevelt College. I was very impressed with your program, KIDSAT, and how motivated middle school students became. I am a secondary school librarian in a newly created progressive high school which is in its third year of [[?]] Many or [[of]] our students represent the lower socio-economic strata of society and represent a rich diversity of ethnic backgrounds. Our faculty is charged with preparing these students for college so they can become positive contributors to society. Thurgood Marshall Academic High School has a science, math, and technology emphasis. Students are required to take four years of both science and math with technology heavily integrated in all disciplines. As a representative of the staff, I would like you to consider admitting students from the high school level into KIDSAT who show academic potential, but whose GPA is in the low C range. The staff and administration are continually looking for ways to "hook" students into learning and your KIDSAT program could be an avenue to lighting up young minds. It would be a privilege to carry on a discussion of this proposal at your convenience. You may call myself or anyone on the administrative staff at 415-695-5612. Yours truly, Joan Leong, librarian
