I would remark that the muster - out of colored troops has diminished the number of pupils in some places; teachers have left for the month; and many of the colored people have gone recently to plantations. Some plantation schools, which have once reported, have lately neglected to do so, though it is known they still exist. One of our schools has been broken up by inundation. All these causes diminish the number of pupils actually reported; though I am aware of other schools having been opened, which will justify us in saying that there has been no real loss, on the whole in the number taught. As the spring advances we must, however, expect many children to go to work on plantations, who are home/in school, and teachers will leave. Thus from various causes, the number of pupils in summer will be comparatively few. I have the honor to be, your obt. servant, Joseph Warren Supt. of Education
