Wed 8/17 - To Victoria B.C.: thru - bus from W. 17th & Cambie to bus depot in town, bus to Tswassen [[Tsawwassen]], ferry to Swartz Bay, on same bus into Victoria. V. not much different from any other city. Bldgs lower, perhaps, & flower baskets on lamp posts & on store fronts. Went on bus tour miles out of city to see Butchart Gardens: sunken garden, mostly garish annuals in borders, Japanese garden mostly clutter of cliches & rose garden overpowered by sweet alyssum borders Very disappointing. A greenhouse of tuberous begonias only rewarding sight but not open [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]]to visitors. The whole trip a disappointment. Back in Vict. walked streets - gift & curio shops. Supper in Empress Hotel. Quite a building. Conservatory, a garden in back - roses. A long border of lavender. Back on ferry at 8. Back in Vanc. at 11. Thurs 8/18. Stayed in except for visit to an antique shop a block away. Roast duck, "chung," zucchini with roast pork. [[strikethrough]]Geo[[/strikethrough]] Geo played his electric Hawn guitar. Slides. To Japanese & rose gardens at Univ BC. Very good. Friday - 8/19. Struggled with p.p. parcels 19#. Off to Tuwanek this eve: These notes are only skimming the surface. I think of these mountains I left behind by Skagway. Skies, clouds, the sea. The utter beauty & drama of that place.
