gun and with almost equal velocity the bird arose vertically at least 40 yards where with outspread wings it eyed us, probably with disgust, for a moment then glided off to one side without moving its wings except a slight change in their inclination During the day a few Branta hutchinsii, Anser albifrons and some unidentified ducks were seen and just before we reached Pastolik a pair of swans flew by. All day the loud rolling cries of cranes were heard from the hillsides along shore and at Romanoff Point some Plectrophanes lapponicus were heard. 11th At 6 a.m started for Kotlik (an Inuit name meaning a pair of pants from the shape of two confluent sloughs of the Yukon there) After we got into the Uphoon (another native name meaning a path, from its being the slough on which most of the travelling is done.) a number of white-fronted geese (Russian Linndonii), Branta leucopania hutchinsii (Lai Dini & Kasanha) were flying about. At 8 a.m. reached Kotlik which I was very glad to do as
