When a Falco [[cohumbonius?]] came along and was brought down but its impetus nearly carried it into the lake at the foot of the slope. We then went on up the hill and reached the top of the peak which is a small crater very perfectly formed but with its northern side gone with an elevated ridge leading there from evidently showing the back of a lava stream. The basaltic Rocks about the crater are of the same formation as all over the Island. Some of those on the North Eastern side being reddened by oxide of iron they contain. From the summit could be seen 3 other lakes very similar to the one described and with it aranged in a series about the North to Western base of the hill It being now late we turned back and at 9 p.m. reached the Redoubt completely exhausted by a tramp of only some 16 miles but which owing to the character of the country is equal to at least three times the distance on favorable ground. On the way back some nestlings of Oedemia americana were obtained and among the beds of rock before mentioned
