State of South Carolina August 1st 1869 Union County To Brevet Maj Genl O.O. Howard Commissionar Bureau R. F & A.L. Washington D.C. The humble petition of the undersigned, citizens of Union County, in the State of South Carolina respectfully herewith, That there is an imperative necessity existing for the construction of a school building for the children of the freedmen of Unionville in this County, more than one hundred of whom are now enjoying limited education advantages which must cease unless the school accommodations can be increased. That the people are in very indigent circumstances: the crops of the present season are unpromising and the prospect of your petitioners buying or building a schoolhouse without assistance is exceedingly poor. That they can expect no aid from the School Commissioner or any of the other officers of the County as they are all opposed politically to the present Administration and to the intellectual advancement of the colored people, and they therefore respectfully and earnestly pray that an appropriation for the purposes herein specified may be made from the fund of the Bureau over which you so acceptably preside- James H. Goss 4th Congressional Dist. SC H W Duncan State Senator Simon Farr Representative J S Mobley Representative Saml Nuckles Representative
