I do not think that whatever schools may be organized in my sub district will be of very long life if they are; as they ought to be sustained by the sole efforts of the colored people; for in my opinion they cannot be relied on to de- feat and overcome the difficulties they have to contend with in this regard without much guidance and assistance. In my sub district there is at present but one school situated near Wharton and taught by Mrs Harriet Smith a colored lady. This school is attended by twenty five scholars Her change for tuition is fifty cents for each pupil Although Mrs Smiths' knowledge & education is not very extensive she is certainly well fitted to teach young beginners while the zeal and care she manifests for their moral culture prove her worthy of the post. In the [[eqyht?]] district some eight miles from Wharton there is a very fair school house owned by the freedmen but unattended by any scholars
