-2- necessity of air consciousness, then by assisting in the organization of the first flying school in Shanghai, in which she also served as an instructor. During the fall of 1936, the people of China everywhere contributed and purchased airplanes as a gift to the Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, commemorating his fiftieth birthday. In Shanghai, more than a hundred planes were assembled and Miss Lee was invited to perform the demonstration. She also started a cross country flight from Shanghai in January, 1937, which lasted until May of the same year. From there she penetrated for the first time many parts of China's interior, visiting Nanking, Sian, Loyang, Chentu, Chungking, Yunan, Taiyuan, Peiping, Canton, Woochow, Nanning, Liuchow, Kiuling, Pakhoi, Haifong, and Honoi, as well as the Hainan Island. The story of this flight was vividly told be her book on civil aviation in China. The Sino Japanese Conflict, which flared up again in the summer of 1937, disrupted her mission of promoting civil aviation. She participated actively in relief work to care for the wounded and suffering people. To this cause her flight will be dedicated. Her plane will be named "The Spirit of China."
