Transcription
Know all men by these presents that Jas. M Gowing of the County of Shelby State of Tenn of the one part and the undersigned Freedmen Henry Anderson Sim Anderson Hanah Anderson [[Fleroby?]] Anderson & Betty Anderson are firmly bound in the following contract and by the rules and regulations annexed. Contract The above named JM Gowing has this day hired the above named Freedmen to serve him as labourers on the Farm rented of Dr. BW Lauderdale in Shelby Cty Tenn. The present year and ending Decr 31st 1866 He agrees to furnish them Houses wood for fires Land stock and agricultural instruments for the cultivation of the farm and to treat them justly and humanely. The said freedmen on their part agrees to furnish their own food clothing and other necessary means of living and to serve the said JM Gowing honestly and faithfully. It is agreed that the wages of said Freedmen shall be one half of the nett proceeds of the cotton made by them but none of the corn crop. The cotton crop shall be the principal one, say 8 acres to the hand and the bal three acres in covers such as potatoes Gardens It shall be for the use of the entire family as the said Gowing may direct. In case said freedmen have not the means of furnishing their own food and other necessary means of living the said Jas. M Gowing agrees to furnish them at cost & carriage the sum thus expended to be deducted by him from the sale proceeds of the crop belonging to them. This contract is not a partnership, Said Freedmen are but hired labourers. Just as if they were payed so much money per month they are to labour exclusively under the controll and direction of their Employer they are to perform any labour he may require of them on the farm or about the
