NHH 656 1237 War Department, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Washington, Sept 22nd 1866 Lieut A Coats Asst Supt Bur RF&AL Newberne, N.C. Lieut In the father's claim on account of Morris Sheppard, deceased, late Pvt. Co. F. 14th USCA (Hy) I have the honor to inform you that evidence is required, showing what was the status of the applicant and mother of decadent, ie: if slave, whether they belonged to the same or different masters, and lived on the same or separate plantations, and whether the care and custody of the children of the parties (deceased included) devolved upon the applicant. This evidence should be in the form of a joint affidavit by two or more persons, whose credibility must be certified to by the officer administering the oath, and which persons must depose as to their disinterestedness in the claim of the person in whose favor they testify.
