The whole affair was brought about by a too free indulgence in whiskey on the part of both whites and blacks Joseph McGee (white) and Henry Cooch (Cold) were the parties who were responsible for the riot and were the only ones seriously injured at the time The Magistrate, John Shacklett during the day (July 5) indulged rather too frequently in intoxicating liquors and when I left I do not believe he was in a fit condition to administer justice. I am of the opinion from what I saw that had not the troops been present serious outrages would have been committed by the whites upon the blacks on that day.
