Bureau Refugees Freedmen & A.L. Sub. District of Chattanooga Chattanooga Tenn. May 31st 1868 W. H. Bowen Lieut. & A.A.A. Genl Nashville Tenn. Lieut Under the head of outrages, I have to report the burning of a building at Wauhatchie Station Hamilton Co. on the night of the 3'd inst. by some person or persons unknown. The building was erected by the freedmen, and used a portion of the winter as a school house; the teacher - a colored man - died before the session was completed. I have endeavored to obtain a clue to the parties who set fire to it, but have failed as yet. It was not a very valuable building as I am informed yet answered the purpose very well. The destruction of this building demonstrates conclusively that a spirit of opposition still exists, to the advancement of the freed- people. Although no one is to be found who does not condemn the Act, I never have been informed of any trouble existing in that neighborhood, between the whites & blacks, and it was the last place that I looked for anything of the kind to occur. Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servt James M. Johnson Sub = Asst. Comr
