Before me personally appeared the undersigned, Ellen Brown, and being duly sworn deposes as follows,

My name is Ellen Brown, I live in the City of Memphis, Tenn, on Court Street, near the Memphis and Charleston Rail Road. On the night of the 3rd of May 1866, the house of Mollie Davis where I was living, was burned down with all its contents.  My loss would amount to $150.00/00.  The night before E. Policeman Edgen and some other man came to the house the night before. I was alone, they knocked at the door and said, "ain't you going to open it? and said if you dont we will burn the house down on you. I made no answer; they started away. It was then I recognized Edgen: in a few minutes they came back and said, lets burn the damned house down on them. I heard a noise as though they were lighting matches. Next morning I saw the matches they had been trying to ignite. It was raining that night.
