0293 249 January 15th 70 Rev. R S Rust Secy F.A.S. of M.E.C. Cor. 5th. and Main Sts., Cincinnati, Ohio Sir: I have the honor to inform you that in consequence of the abolition of the Free School Law of the State of Tennessee, very many of the schools for Freedmen sustained under the system in whole or in part, have been compelled to close. The Freedmen Schools at Humboldt, Gibson Co. Tenn. under the charge of Miss Jennie Starkey (white) has fallen before the [[?]], and I would be glad if she could be taken up and sustained by your society. Miss Starkey has taught at this point about two years, surrounded by an intensely hostile element of society and undergoes a promotion which would I believe appointed now your friend Miss Taber. Very respectfully Your obedient Servant C. E. Compton. Bvt Lt Col. U.S.A. Supt. of Ed.
