AMERICAN BAPTIST HOME MISSION SOCIETY, Room 12, No. 39 Park Row, New York, July 13th, 1870. For Freedmen's Education and Southern Work, Address, Rev. JAMES B. SIMMONS, Cor. Sec'y. [[stamp]] NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]] Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard Washington D.C. Very Dear Sir: I think our brn. will favor your proposition to put $8000. at Columbia & the other $5000. at Augusta. I will let you know D.V. next week. But now, a staunch friend of yours & of the Freedmen has just paid into our treasury $5000. It was done yesterday. He would be glad to have you duplicate it. Can you not, in some way? By the arrangement of $8000 at Columbia & $5000. at Augusta from you, we shall be short at both places. Please think of this. And if by special painstaking you could squeeze out $5000. more, to help put the buildings in readiness for this winter's school, it would cheer our people wonderfully. You need not trouble to answer this. But those words of yours in reference to further help for Augusta, [[crossed out]] En [[crossed out]] "I will if I can" still give me courage to hope. Very truly as always James B. Simmons
