37 The old teacher was sentences and whipped, fifty lashes upon his bare back, and imprisoned one month! A COINCIDENCE The very lot upon which old brother Purdy was found teaching his secret school, and upon which his blood dropped from his lacerated back, is THE LOT which our Home Mission Society has bought for the purpose of erecting our Theological and Normal Institute! This fact was not known to me until after the purchase, but we thank God, that, in his Providence, we are permitted to consecrate to the work of educating colored preachers and teachers that very spot upon which a teacher's blood has dropped, during the times of Slavery and oppression, for daring to do the very work which we now propose to do upon that soil! HELP US to erect upon that ground a building for this work! FEELINGS OF THE SOUTHERN WHITE PEOPLE. IN answer to many inquiries, "How do the Southern whites treat you?"--"How do the Southerners feel by this time?" &c., I will offer a few replies: 1st. As to how I have been treated, personally among them. I have no complaints to make, but simply state the facts bearing upon the general subject. We who go from the North to teach the colored people, are not simply called "carpet baggers," buy commonly styled "Yankee Nigger Teachers," and, as such, are at once brought down to the lowest level of degradation,, I the option of those applying the epithets. Southern newspapers are very severe and abusive upon Northern teachers as a class. The females, even, are not allowed to escape their von, but are most hatefully slandered and culumniated, in character and motive. The Northern teachers are not treated with any courtesy, are denied all privileges of society, and even holding repulsed
