Nashville Oct 29 1870 J. B. Comr Esqr. Dear Sir: The cases in the United States District Court against M. M. Cloon, W. W. Ingersoll and S.H. Ingersoll have occupied almost my entire time since the opening of the Court two weeks since. We had a large number of witnesses in attendance from Giles County - eighty six miles distant - all poor and ignorant, and requiring as much attention as so many children. S. H. Ingersoll has never been found and is in parts unknown. W. W. Ingersoll, as you are aware, forfeited his bonds, and judgment has been taken against his bondsmen, Silas F. Allen, D.W. Glassie and others. We tried M. M. Cloon on an indictment for forging a power of attorney. The trial occupied four days. A clear case of forgery was made against him, but Judge Trigg instructed the jury that they must acquit the prisoner because the indictment was not found until more than two years after the crime was committed! This was a most unexpected charge. The indictment was found under the Act of 1790, which provides that no person shall be prosecuted for treason or other capital offences, (wilful murder and forgery excepted)
